A BRIEF HISTORY
Catholic Charities has always been blessed with a strong donor base. In fact, we were receiving more calls from donors wanting to donate their household items than we had clients that could use the items. Back in July 2003, Catholic Charities made the decision to open a thrift store to sell excess items to the public where 100% of all proceeds would go directly back to the agency. With over 80 thrift stores operating in the Kansas City area, we chose not to look at them, but instead patterned the store after successful retailers such as Wal*Mart and Target.
With a group of about 20 volunteers, TurnStyles opened February 14, 2004 in a 2,800 square foot store. The donor drop-offs averaged 20 per week. After about 18 months, as the donors, volunteers, and customers grew, we made the decision to move across the parking lot into an 18,000 square foot location. On Saturday, October 1, 2005 the old store closed. On October 2, with about 50 volunteers and 15 pizzas, we moved to the new store, and on October 3 opened at our present location.
TODAY
The goal of TurnStyles has always been to save people money so they can improve their lives, while at the same time generating revenue to assist Catholic Charities with over 20 programs that serve our community.
Store operations are Monday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The store is primarily operated with a relatively small paid staff, and Catholic Charities' largest group of volunteers. While focusing on good quality items at an affordable price, we also receive items that do not meet our particularly high standards, but still have value. Shoes, toys, stuffed animals, belts and purses, clothing, and metal items not meeting our quality expectations are re-cycled. Approximately every 6 weeks, we have a volunteer group fill a 53 foot trailer with items purchased by a company that processes, sorts, clean, and delivers to third-world countries. This product is re-sold to individual shop owners that in turn sell the product in their local markets for pennies on the dollar. Not only does it provide income for these merchants, but provides low-cost quality items to their customers. Catholic Charities donors have provided clothing to Guatemala , Panama , Bangladesh and several African countries. In addition to being “Green”, these items also generate over $50,000 per year of additional income for Catholic Charities.
We would like to invite all to get involved with Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas and see just how much fun helping others can be! To learn more about Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas, please visit CatholicCharitiesKs.org. |
